About me
I grew up on a small farm in Michigan. I’ve changed and grown through many different versions of myself, but two things that have always been core to who I am are 1) a deep love of nature, and 2) a deep love of people.
For as long as I can remember, I have been wildly curious about these two things. Even as a child, I spent a lot of time contemplating humanity; how people work, why they do what they do, etc. I wanted to know everything and I wanted to know how I could help other people.
When I went to college, I took some psychology classes and instantly knew that I wanted that to be my major. I ended up getting a B.A. in Psychology with a minor in Theatre Arts. After I graduated, I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, so I spent some time doing social work and then behavioral therapy. Neither of these things felt like a good fit, so I went back to grad school and got my M.A. in Counseling Psychology. From there, I jumped into private practice. Those are the facts of it, but what’s also true is that I had to do a lot of my own work to understand myself and heal along the way. Therapy has helped me understand myself to a depth that I didn’t know was possible, which is part of why I value it so much. Now that I understand myself, I can take better care of myself. Ultimately, that’s what I’m passionate about helping other people do….learn to love and care for themselves and the people in their lives.
Outside of my therapy office….I enjoy many things including: spending time with the people that I love, hiking, theatre, playing with my cats, running, and making puzzles. I also spend a lot of time walking and listening to audiobooks.
As a therapist, I value curiosity, empathy, honesty, and playfulness. I practice a variety of modalities depending on each client’s needs. But, I think about therapy relationally. We learn to exist in the world based off of how we are related too. This creates patterns of relating to ourselves and others which we may not even be consciously aware that we hold. Therapy is a space to make those unconscious patterns conscious so that you have more agency over your thoughts and behaviors. Therapy is a space to create a new relational experience. One where you are met with empathy and kindness rather than judgment. Since the therapeutic relationship is part of the healing process, I practice long-term therapy (typically a year or more). You have spent your lifetime becoming the way that you are and it takes time to learn new ways of being. As a part of this process, I’ll invite you to be open with me. You can disagree or be angry. You can feel whatever it is you feel. This is a space to have your genuine response. All of you is welcome here.
